June 30 - Although not originally listed to be on this week's guest schedule, last night BNN advertised Jason Donville on Marketcall today. We are genuinely excited for this as he is without a doubt one of the best analyst guests. Two of his picks from Christmas Eve are up over 100% in less than 6 months (the other down 27% so don't go thinking he's perfect) and even one of his picks from his last appearance 2 months ago is up over 33%. Remember, the TSX is down 1% for the year! From our database (which is only available to paid members) you can see all of his past picks and how they have performed and the pattern shows consistently 2 out of 3 top picks outperform significantly with one always to the downside. Expect to hear about healthcare names and hopefully a new name, or two, since most of his favourites have already risen so much.
As expected, CRH Medical (CRH) was a top pick again and the stock rose 11% before the pick was made, rising another 5% in less than a full trading day since!
June 22 - After a week packed full or Canadian small-caps, contrarian views and relatively unknown picks last week, this week's BNN Marketcall lineup is full of more global, conservative guests. REITs with Derek Warren (Tuesday evening), North American large-caps with Stan Wong (Wednesday evening) and Global Equities with Charles Lannon (Wednesday) and Craig Millar (Thursday). Needless to say we are not expecting any new ideas or trade opportunities in these areas, although collecting more information and diverse opinions never hurts.
June 18 - Stephen Takacsy with a trio of new top picks (two of which are relative unknowns in the Canadian Investment Community. We own Ag Growth (AFN) and recommend a market weight position if you do not already own it. It has bounced around in about a 10% range since the acquisition of Vicwet and is still attractive at these levels (we owned Vicwest and like Stephen moved into Ag Growth afterwards). The other two picks are both in the medical mobility space with Savaria (SIS) and Prism Medical (PM). Both of these pay dividends, trade at reasonable valuations and with the aging populations becoming a greater portion of our demographics we see some growth potential. These are trading at 15-20 times their average daily volume today, but we see these as stable long-term dividend-paying holdings so liquidity or volatility does not worry us.
We sold most of our Prism Medical (PM) as it ran up 6.3% and the dividend is paid annually (thus almost a full year from the next payment). Savaria (SIS) has also risen nicely (6.8%) so we sold some of this as well, however it is a larger business with a quarterly dividend therefore we see it as more stable with less potential upside or downside. Keeping a small underweight position in both names is what we recommend.
June 13 - Exciting week ahead as far as BNN guests go, with James Telfser, Benj Gallander, Stephen Takacsy, Peter Imhof and several more great names all on the docket.
Too many recommendations here to include them all, idea sharing for subscribers only.
June 6 - Looking ahead to next week Eric Nuttall is appearing on Marketcall Monday. You can expect to hear about his usual preferred energy plays (Whitecap, Crescent Point and Cardinal Energy), but I am more interested in the small caps he has started covering since became portfolio manager of the Sprott Small Cap Equity Fund. We agree with his view that there is some value left in the small cap space in Canada, both in energy and elsewhere, so we are looking forward to any updates he may provide. Some of his small cap holdings we like are easyhome (EH) and Grenville Strategic Royalty (GRC).
Also, with Eric Nuttall's appearance coming up today we are shorting DIRTT Environmental (DRT) as Mr. Nuttall has sold all of his holdings in this previous top pick. We are of the same view that after running up a100% return since his recommendation, it no longer appears to be attractively valued.
DIRTT Environmental (DRT) fell significantly as expected, dropping a whopping 15.9% last week, meanwhile Grenville Strategic Royalty (GRC) rose a solid 5.7%. Easyhome was our only disappointment of the week, trading fairly flat and closing the week down 1.8%.
June 4 - Last week we re-entered Neptune Technologies & Bioressource (NTB). This is a favourite and repeated top pick of frequent BNN guest Alex Ruus (last night's Marketcall Tonight guest) that unfortunately is getting no love from the market. The stock is a rarity in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical space that was on a steady decline and near 52 week lows. We were accumulating between $1.56-$1.62 over several days. We closed most of the position, letting some of the profits play out long-term with this story.
One Week Trade - Sold the majority of position for a 10.2% profit!
